Burton Snowboard
Burton Snowboard
Task: Rebrand a company’s logo with a new design
Criteria: Create illustration with company logo included
Ideation
For this project specifically there was a lot of trial and error. You could say it is an older way of doing things but I like pen to paper. So, in my ideation and sketching I did a lot of work with as many “Burton” logos I could find. Throughout my studies I sketched “Burton” logos from simplistic to maximalism versions.
As I went through these logos I came by a concept to wrap the logos around the snowboard.
As you can see there have been plenty of Burton logos through the years that have adapted to new times but always stay true to their vibe.
It was quite a fun journey going through Burton’s history. As a snowboarder myself I have always liked snowboarding and the vibe that came with it.
As I narrowed my concepts and sketches I started to see what my illustration could be or at least close to what I want it to look like. Since I love reggae music and am a Rastafarian I decided to go with a “Rasta” themed snowboard that still keeps the “Burton” vibe.
My final concept idea was taking all of the Burton logos I could find as well as some doodling sketches I had before. Wrapping both my sketches and the logos together around the snowboard from front to back. But also making sure you know it is “Burton” with the most recent or known logo centered.
After sketching different elements to eventually put together I started to sketch them digitally to start bring my concept to life.
It may seem like a lot of back and forth during this process but for artist or maybe just me this part of bringing a concept to life is a lot of fun. Being able to constantly keep working a concept that you know will work until it reveals itself to you.
These were some of the logos and sketches I digitized. I started to combine them as well as bring the shape of the snowboard in to see what needed work or not.
Now this is where I began to piece elements together. Bringing in all my elements, and the accents to the snowboard.
After exploring many options and elements I eventually came up with this design. I decided to bring in a rasta gradient as well as the sketches with logos.
Here I wanted to showcase my illustration on a real snowboard to bring it to life. Showcasing how my design wraps around the snowboard.
This is the design on the bottom side of the snowboard.
Both my designs side by side on a mockup of a snowboard.
This was my final mockup putting the design on a snowboarder taking a break.
I do hope you enjoyed this journey seeing my process and how my mind breaks down a new challenge.
