SPOTTIEOTTIE
SPOTTIEOTTIE
Task: Make your own typeface from scratch.
Criteria: Create a typeface with the full alphabet and a Type Specimen to showcase it.
Ideation
I have always been interested in typography and never really knew much about it. But I would always play with typography in different ways.
As I was playing around with different styles and texture I came up with a typeface that emphasizes the accents of a line. I incorporated my “doodling” style to give each letter some characteristics.
After some music and a lot of work I was able to get the full alphabet with the help of some guides.
In the process of building this typeface one song in particular stood out and actually helped me name the typeface.
The song is called “SpottieOttieDopalisious” by Outkast, thankfully my friend showed me this song.
Creation
With the completion of my alphabet and the name of the typeface I am able to put everything together to begin my journey to a Type Specimen to properly show off my new Typeface.
I am very happy about how my typeface turned out. I was able to keep my playful style but also keeping it calm, cool, and collect with a professional finish.
Now I must showcase this new typeface in a Type Specimen, but I had idea for that already.
Properly showcasing my typeface would be tricky at first but pleasant in the end.
My next step was to make sure my Type Specimen had every letter of the alphabet. from there piece by piece I start to see my Type Specimen reveal itself to me.
To showcase fully my typeface I wanted to highlight what makes it so unique and special. Within each letter there is a different amount of spotted and solid lines as well as solid shapes throughout the bodies of the letters.
I wanted to keep your attention throughout my Type Specimen. To do that I added doodling accents guiding your eye around the entire page to full grapse my typeface and what makes it unique.
Like in all my letters inside the body they are unique characteristics.
To give emphasis I enlarged the “B” that show the differences in each letter. You just have to look closer.
To finish my Type Specimen off I added a paragraph of what my typeface is about and I put the name spelled out at the bottom.
After combining different elements to showcase my typeface this is the final version. Also, here is my Type Specimen on mockup to give another perspective.
I hope you enjoyed this journey.
